Kozhikode’s industrial base is not built around one large plant. The Ministry of MSME’s district profile counts 18,623 industrial units, of which 2,455 are rubber, plastic and petro-based, the single largest category, with footwear named first among the district’s exportable items. Across its micro and small enterprises, 31,772 people work in 7,711 registered units. That works out to roughly four people each. This is a district of small moulding shops, and the ones that outgrow a ledger book all outgrow it in the same place.
What an ERPNext implementation in Kozhikode has to solve
In a moulding business the machine is rarely the bottleneck. The mould is. A press can run any job; only one mould can make a particular article, it has a finite number of shots in it before it needs refurbishment, and while it is on one press it is not available for anything else. A system that plans the total and not the ratio produces full warehouses and short deliveries at the same time.
Schedule the tooling, not just the machine
Each mould registered as an asset with its own cavity count, shot life and refurbishment history, and planning that respects which tool is mounted where. Without it, the schedule is a wish.
Compounds with reclaim in the recipe
The formulation carries its regrind percentage, so the cost of a batch reflects what actually went into it. What proportion of reclaim is acceptable is your commercial and technical decision, not something we can set for you; the system’s job is to record and cost the decision you make.
Size and model ratios as first-class data
Orders, production plans and despatches held at size level, so a run that is complete in pairs but short in two sizes is visible before the lorry is loaded, not after.
Rejection recorded at the cavity
A four-cavity tool with one bad cavity looks like a 25 per cent scrap rate at batch level and like a maintenance job at cavity level. Only one of those readings tells you what to do.

Can ERPNext treat a mould as a scheduled resource?
Yes. Tools can be held as assets with their own attributes and maintenance schedules, and routings can be defined so an operation requires both a machine and a specific tool. It needs deliberate setup; it is not the default behaviour.
Can a formulation include a variable proportion of reclaim?
Yes. A bill of materials can be versioned, and batches can record actual consumption against the standard, so the variance from reclaim is visible in costing rather than hidden inside overhead.
Can we manage size and colour runs without creating hundreds of items by hand?
Yes. Item variants generate the combinations from attributes, so an article with eight sizes and three colours is defined once, not twenty-four times.
We are a small unit with four or five people. Is ERPNext too much?
It can be, if it is implemented as though you were a large plant. The scope that works at this size is narrow: items and tooling, production and rejection, stock, and billing. Payroll, quality modules and detailed costing can wait until there is someone whose job it is to look at them.
How long does an ERPNext implementation take here?
Eight to fourteen weeks for a single unit with a defined product range. Longer where the tool register has to be built from scratch, which is common and is time well spent.
