ERPNext v16: Should You Upgrade from v15? 7 Changes That Matter
ERPNext v16 is the largest ERPNext release since v15 arrived in September 2023. Frappe shipped it in December 2025 with more than 50 new features built by over 600 contributors, and by now most Indian manufacturers and distributors on v15 are asking the same question: should we upgrade to ERPNext v16 this year, and what will it cost us in time and risk? This guide answers both, based on how we plan upgrades for clients.

What is new in ERPNext v16
Frappe describes ERPNext v16 as its most stable major release yet. The changes fall into three groups: manufacturing, accounting and platform stability. Here are the seven that matter most to the businesses we work with.
1. A dedicated MRP workflow
Material requirements planning now has its own workflow that pulls together sales forecasts, delivery schedules and supplier lead times, then proposes production and purchase. In v15, most teams stitched this together from the Production Plan and spreadsheets.
2. Stock reservation for work orders
Materials can be reserved against a work order so that another order, or a sales delivery, cannot quietly consume them. For shops that run many small batches, this removes a daily source of shortages on the floor.
3. Inward subcontracting
Job workers and contract manufacturers can now receive raw material from a customer, convert it and return finished goods inside the standard flow. Landed cost vouchers also work for subcontracted receipts, so freight and duty reach the true item cost.
4. Serial and batch traceability report
A single report traces materials backward and forward through production and distribution. Pharma, food and chemical manufacturers answering a recall or an audit query will feel this one immediately.
5. Custom financial report templates
Finance teams can build formula-driven P&L and balance sheet layouts, which helps with group reporting and board packs that never matched the standard format.
6. Consolidated trial balance and closing automation
A consolidated trial balance across subsidiaries, with currency conversion, plus automatic closing stock posting for periodic accounting, shortens month end for multi-company groups.
7. Performance and safer defaults
Background jobs handle heavy operations more smoothly, large datasets behave better and default settings are safer. These are invisible in a demo but very visible at month end on a busy site.
Should you upgrade to ERPNext v16 now?
Our answer depends on how you use ERPNext today, not on the release date.
- Upgrade soon if you manufacture to order, run subcontracting, fight material shortages or need traceability for customers or regulators. ERPNext v16 solves problems you are paying for today.
- Plan for the next quarter if you are a trading or services business on a stable v15. The gains are real but not urgent, so schedule the move outside your busiest season.
- Wait and prepare if you depend on custom apps that have not been tested on v16. The upgrade is only as safe as your least maintained customisation.
How to plan a safe ERPNext v16 upgrade
An upgrade is a small project, not a button. The sequence we use keeps the business running throughout.
- Inventory your customisations. List every custom app, custom field, client script and server script. Confirm the apps you rely on, such as India Compliance, have a release that supports v16.
- Clone production. Restore a recent backup to a separate site and run the upgrade there first.
- Test your top 20 transactions. Sales order to invoice, purchase to payment, work order to finished goods, GST returns and your key reports. Compare figures against v15.
- Train power users on the new flows. MRP and stock reservation change daily habits, so show people before go-live, not after.
- Cut over on a quiet day with a fresh backup and a written rollback plan.
For most mid-sized sites this takes two to four weeks of elapsed time, most of it testing. The cost is driven by customisation, not by the version jump itself, which is why a clean v15 site upgrades far more cheaply than a heavily modified one.

Frequently asked questions
When was ERPNext v16 released?
ERPNext v16 was released in December 2025, a little over two years after v15.
Can we skip v16 and stay on v15?
For a while, yes. But fixes and new features focus on the newest versions, so staying put indefinitely builds up upgrade debt that gets more expensive every year.
Will our customisations break on ERPNext v16?
Standard configuration carries over well. Custom apps and scripts need testing, and some need small code changes. That is why we always rehearse the upgrade on a copy of live data first.
