First on factories, third on value added

The Annual Survey of Industries places 15.43% of India’s factories and 15.24% of its manufacturing workforce in Tamil Nadu. Both figures lead the country. Output and value added both come in third, behind Gujarat and Maharashtra.

That is not a criticism of the state. It is a description of its industrial shape. Tamil Nadu’s strength is breadth: thousands of mid-sized units spread across Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Salem, Erode, Hosur and Chennai, rather than a small number of very large plants. Breadth makes an economy resilient. It also makes individual companies harder to run. A manufacturer with three units in three districts carries most of the operational complexity of a large group, without the systems budget that usually comes with one.

That is the business we are usually called into. Not a greenfield plant, but a company that has outgrown the spreadsheets and the standalone accounting package it started on, and now needs one system across every unit.

When the decision is statewide, not local

Some questions only appear once a company operates in more than one place. These are the ones that decide how an ERPNext implementation should be structured, and they are easy to get wrong at the start and expensive to unpick later.

• Several units, one company. Whether each plant becomes a separate company in ERPNext or a warehouse under one company changes your reporting, your stock valuation and your permissions model. It is not a preference. It follows from how you are registered and how you want to see cost.
• One registration, several premises. GST registration is state-wise, so plants inside Tamil Nadu can usually sit under a single state registration with each site declared as an additional place of business. Moving stock between them is not a taxable supply, but it still has to be recorded, valued and often carried on an e-way bill. Cross into Karnataka or Kerala and the same movement becomes a supply between two registrations, with tax on it. ERPNext handles both, but only if the entity and warehouse structure reflects that from day one.
• One chart of accounts. If each unit has evolved its own ledger names, nothing compares. Cost per tonne at one plant will not mean cost per tonne at another. Agreeing a single chart of accounts is usually the hardest conversation in the project and the one that pays for itself first.
• Costing that survives comparison. Once two plants make the same item, someone will ask why one costs more. That question is only answerable if both use the same valuation method, the same overhead absorption basis and the same routing discipline.
• Group reporting without a monthly scramble. Consolidated stock, receivables and margin across every unit, available on demand rather than assembled by hand in the first week of every month.
